i read somewhere story that CBS day before that recording came to the studio and recorded band playing Vegetables and I'm in great shape but they decided (or Brian himself) that that was not so good and Brian invited them to his house next day to record this particular video. So... fingers crossed, maybe one day we will be able to see that lost recording

This video was recorded in the mid 60's. Brian and Van Dyke wrote this song for SMiLE, but this was the only recording of this particular song from that time period. Years later when Carl was under pressure from the record label to use more songs penned by Brian, he dug up this recording and added in his own voice (in parts) and a backing band to make it whole. It was ultimately released on the aptly named "Surf's Up" album in the early 70's.

This is probably elsewhere in this comment thread, but this is from Leonard Bernstein's TV special "Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution" circa 1967.

Wow... I always loved Brian's Compositions. I didn't even know this video existed, the piano rehersal for Surf's Up from way back in 1966. Does it really matter how long it took Brian to finish his Album, Smile? I don't think so. What matters is that he finished it, and it's PERFECT. As the group Chicago said in one of their hits, "The Good Things in Life, Take Along Time... Hell Yes!" |
